Jim Houghton is an integral part of L&A’s creative design team. In addition to being a gifted designer, he is also a talented artist and project manager! Before joining Leathers, Jim operated his own design studio for close to three decades, doing work which included magazine illustration, technical drawings, advertising & collateral design, cartoon strips and more. (In 1986, Jim did an illustration of Bob Leathers for a regional profile!) Jim’s responsibilities with our firm include all phases of design, including schematics, artist renderings, details and innovative new component designs. Jim specializes in creating all-inclusive play spaces. His playground creations have earned numerous awards for their design and inclusiveness. He is a nationally certified playground safety inspector (CPSI) and knows the safety standards and guidelines that apply to today’s playgrounds.
Jim has specialized training in graphic design, illustration, photography, architectural drafting and Computer Aided Design from Tompkins Cortland Community College. As part of Jim’s continued education he has taken courses and workshops on all-inclusive accessible play and playground safety. He is responsible for creating all of our 3D artist renderings. His designs can be found all across the country and the majority of his work focuses on all-inclusive accessible play. He has been with L&A for five years designing and project managing. During this time he has designed more than 50 playgrounds and parks. Jim has also served as a special features and art consultant on playground builds.
Jim notes: “When I was a kid, playgrounds looked nothing like they do today. Leathers & Associates literally invented much of the visual and structural iconography of the modern playground. It’s exciting to have the chance to participate in such a legendary organization, and to help develop the next generation of ‘essential’ playgrounds.”
